Hiriko - The Foldable Electric Car Set To Roll in 2013
Hiriko, a small but highly parking-friendly electric car prototype is set on its way to fit into your clumsy parking space. Thanks to its design that makes it even smaller when it is parked than when rolling on the roads. The car essentially bears a mechanism that eventually puckers up its rear end under the chassis making the carâs length to be reduced dramatically thus making it possible to park three Hirikos in a single parking bay. Amazing, isnât it?

The carâs foldable mechanism shrinks the overall length from 100 inches to about 60 inches which is absolutely surprising. Moreover the driver need not leave from the comfort of his seat; the car is set to fold-up automatically once it comes into a parking lot. Can you ever imagine a car that with miniature design can become even smaller?
Other than the aesthetic design, the car is loaded with a surprising feature named ârobot wheelsâ which let the windshields wide open once the car is parked so that the driver and the passengers need not worry about getting out of the car squeezing themselves between other cars. Robot wheels are driven by a motor, steering actuators, suspension and motor brakes, all controlled by a drive-by-wire system.

The car promises to provide a long run (typically 120 km) when the battery is fully charged. The Hiriko prototype is basically the result of the CityCar project by MIT in collaboration with Denokinn and a pool of Spanish business. The car is expected to take up the streets in 2013 with a price tag of around US$17,430 making it the ideal car for inner-city hiring strategy.
