Eugene J. Polley Dies At 96 In Illinois. Leaves Behind Legacy Of Wireless TV Remote Controls.

Eugene J. Polly, the inventor of Wireless TV Remote Controls has died at the age of 96 in Illinois. Polly began his career as an electronics engineer in 1935 for Zenith Radio Corporation (now called Zenith Electronics, a subsidiary of LG electronics). In 1955, he invented the first wireless TV remote control and called it "Flash-Matic". Here's how it looked -

Now Flash Matic wasn't a very perfect wireless TV remote control. It required a precise angle with the TV to work. But it offered a huge advantage over Zenith's first remote controller called "Lazy Bones" (like the name?) which connected with the TV set with an umbilical like chord.
