Does OnePlus 5 Still Have The Power To Be The Flagship Killer? Find Out Here

We have a couple of hours left before the OnePlus 5 makes it to India tomorrow at 2pm in Mumbai, so we can devote the time to learn about the famous flagship killer that was launched yesterday night in the US. OnePlus has managed to upset the competition from the likes of Samsung, LG and Sony by offering excellent hardware at lower prices. With the OnePlus 5 the company continues the trend as it has launched the entry-level variant at $479 (Rs. 31,000) and the top end variant at $539 (Rs.34,800). With these prices the OnePlus 5 is still the most affordable flagship smartphone. The current generation of flagship smartphones such as the Sasmung Galaxy S8, LG G6 and Sony Xperia XZs are priced at around Rs. 50000.

OnePlus 5 1

The OnePlus 5 looks incredibly similar to the iPhone 7 Plus with its dual-camera setup and jet black colour variant. The OnePlus series has never been known for its looks and it’s on the inside that matters, which we shall discuss in a few moments. The OnePlus 5 has a 5.5inch 1080p AMOLED display which is encased in Corning Gorilla Glass 5. This robs the OnePlus 5 of the title of being a flagship as the Samsung Galaxy S8 has a larger Quad HD+ resolution dual edge display and so does the LG G6. The OnePlus 5 manages to overcome this drawback by equipping itself with the fastest chipset and most RAM that can be fit on a smartphone. The OnePlus has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset that houses 2.45GHz octa-core processor and Adreno 540 GPU. You can find either 6 or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM on the OnePlus 5. You have to note here that the more expensive Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 have 4GB of RAM. The OnePlus 5 is available in 64GB and 128GB internal memory variants with no option to expand the memory with the help of microSD cards.

OnePlus 5 2

The OnePlus 5 runs Oxygen OS which is based on Android Nougat. The biggest change on the OnePlus comes with its cameras. On the rear we find a dual camera setup courtesy of Sony. You have a 16MP wide-angle lens and a 20MP telephoto sensor coupled with dual LED flash. On the front we have got a massive 16MP camera for selfies. The OnePlus 5 plays it safe when it comes to connectivity options. While some flagships are ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack in favour of the space saving USB Type C connectivity, the OnePlus 5 has both of them. The USB Type C helps with the Dash Charge feature that recharges the 3300mAh non removable battery at a faster speed. The OnePlus 5 can be operated with capacitive hardware buttons as well as on screen navigation icons. The fingerprint sensor has been duly included in addition to a new hardware button called the Alert Slide which lets to quickly silence your smartphone. Overall the OnePlus 5 tries its best to retain its flagship killer title. Its success in budget sensitive market like India can be calculated tomorrow based on its launch price which may hover around its US pricing.

Impressive hardware; but I'm not sure how much of it is really needed on a handheld anyways. The gaming is already at par with last generation of consoles; and frankly speaking - it's already too much for a smaller screen.

Unless the phones start powering VR headsets and start fully supporting AI, I'm not sure what are people going to do with 8 Gigs of memory. Plus, a solid hardware requires equally powerful battery; and the current generation of batteries don't hold up. I think we're far from having batteries that'll support our phones for over a week on regular usage.

I'd rather buy a Xiaomi for much cheaper than One Plus 5. It'd offer more punch for the buck. What say?
