For all those tech lovers, who are excited about the much anticipated Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas (6 to 9 January), BMW promises to come up with something truly spectacular. This year, BMW will present its brand new gesture controlled interface, which will allow drivers to control certain features of the car with a mere swipe of their hands. Although critics aren't quite convinced, BMW is confident about their prospects.

According to the press release, the gesture controlled interface named ‘AirTouch’ is a futuristic high end technology that enables the driver to control music playback, navigation and communication using a simple gesture with a flat hand. This feature not only empowers the secondary control system, but also provides a great scope for ‘intelligent’ electronics to grow.

It is worth noting, that the CES 2015 also witnessed BMWs gesture controlled interface. However, back then the feature was restricted to simple finger-based gestures for commands such as changing volume and taking calls, which is now a part of BMW 7 series.

This year, as expected, BMW has changed the position of the sensors to the dashboard, which now offers a 3D gesture control system. Simply stating, you no longer have to make any physical contact. You can just tilt your hand and see the effect, be it your favourite song playing or dialling your loved one.

AirTouch gives you the option of confirming an action as well. A hidden AirTouch button is placed on the rim of the steering wheel, which is located on the left side of the driving seat. One tap with the thumb is enough to power the control system efficiently and produce the desired result.

In the official release, BMW announced its decision to take part in the exhibition and present its newly designed interface for the future car. BMW hasn't announced from when the new technology will be implemented in cars, and will largely depend on the response from experts at the CES. There is little doubt however, that the new BMW gesture controlled system has a potential to revolutionize the field of automobile engineering.
