Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California had taken first step towards creating a new microbial life that are not known anywhere on the planet earth.

The natural genetic code (in DNA) of all living things are consist of four bases – Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanine (G) and Thymine (T). An additional letter, Uracil (U), is found in RNA. All the known life on earth are encoded in paired partnerships of these DNA bases, A-T and C-G and only these sequences make up all life forms.

    Older DNA

Scientist from Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California lead by Dr Floyd Romesberg has created the DNA of the new semi-synthetic microbe, that has a extra base pairs, denoted by X and Y.

    Newer DNA

The Pair X-Y pair up together like the other base pairs and are fully integrated into the rest of the DNA’s genetic code. The research group mentioned that the semi-synthetic E. coli bacterium are able to grow and reproduce normally despite containing a extra unknown base pair in their genetic. However the life of the semi-synthetic bacteria is possible only inside the laboratory only as they might not be not able to grow and reproduce with their synthetic DNA strand unless they are continuously fed with the newly added pair – synthetic chemicals called "d5SICS" and "dNaM", that are made in laboratory and do not exist in nature.

How it was done: The first step for translating the new genetic code was to replicate the unnatural base pairs ("d5SICS" and "dNaM") in a test tube and then transcribed semi-synthetic DNA into RNA – into a protein. The artificial base pair molecules fluid solution was transported into the bacteria E.Coli. Using this scientists were able to synthesize circular loops of DNA known as plasmids and insert them into E. coli. To everyone's surprise, the semi-synthetic plasmids didn't effect the reproductive growth of the bacteria.

This is a great research, that can prove that the aliens spices may exist in nature.
However, another group believes that rapid advancement of ‘synthetic biology’ may lead to the a life that can have unpredictable consequences on existing natural living beings.
