I’m sure you’ve heard the news of OpenAI planning to build its own social network like “X”. One may wonder why’d an AI company want to build a social network.

    The answer is: Real-time Data

Data is the “oxygen” for the AI companies. OpenAI requires a constant feed of real, human-created, up-to-date data to keep their LLMs (Large Language Models) effective and relevant. That’s only possible when there’s a way to acquire all the information about latest happenings contributed by humans.

Right now, Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) is in a better position. Because all the latest happenings are contributed by people on X. Whether its News, Sports, Research, Product Releases - X is one of the first platforms to get the updated information.

This gives X an unfair advantage over OpenAI, which needs to gather stale data by visiting various websites. The only way for OpenAI to solve this problem is to build their own network and hope that a good portion of X’s audience will join them.

Google, which is big Gorilla in this battle seems to be lagging behind. Sure their latest Gemini models are impressive; but the marketing hype just isn’t there.

Would love to know how do you see OpenAI vs X battle? Would you join OpenAI’s social network?
