CMU Muggles Devise A Localizing and Tracking Marauder's Map
What kind of mortal is unaware of the fascinating world of Harry Potter and who is he that is not guilty of woolgathering of the wizardly world. In the Harry Potter universe, the Marauder's Map serves as a key to secret pathways and passages in the castle as well as identifying each person, moving or otherwise, within the confines of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The revealing magical document has served as an inspiration to three Researchers, Shoou-I Yu, Yi Yang and Alexander Hauptmann at the Carnegie Mellon University. The muggle definition of the device is 'Localizing and Tracking Multiple Persons-of-Interest by Nonnegative Discretization.' It aims to work in real world surveillance scenarios, including complex indoor environments where occlusions are many.
The researchers have proposed an algorithm that uses a tracking-by-detection approach to perform a robust person localization, in a semi-supervised learning framework. A number of features including color, person detection, face recognition and non-background information contribute in the process of tracking. By the application of multi-camera multi-object tracking, the team has been more or less successful at achieving its goal of pin-pointing the locations of individuals in outdoor as well as indoor environments.
