Wikipedia goes HTTPS to become more secure from governments and ISPs
World's largest, favorite and crowd-edited online encyclopedia, Wikipedia is now more secure with HTTPS. HTTPS is 'HTTP Secure' - an Internet protocol that ensures secure communication over a computer network through encryption technology. It creates an encrypted connection between the computer or mobile you are using and the Wikipedia page that you are accessing. Because of this encryption, the connection becomes inert to interception by ISPs or governments. Wikipedia officials announced the migration from HTTP to HTTPS two days ago through their official blog.
The Wikimedia officials mentioned that they've been working on setting up the appropriate infrastructure and technologies to implement the HTTPS since last four years. Users could access Wikipedia over encrypted network through HTTPS Everywhere service and since 2013, all the users logged in to Wikipedia could use the site over HTTPS.
Do users need to take any special steps to access the secured Wikipedia? No, you will continue to browse Wikipedia just the way you've been except that all the URLs will now begin with https:// instead of https://
The engineering teams at Wikimedia Foundation are now focused on implementation of HTTPS protocol all over Wikimedia websites and the complete transaction is expected to take a few more weeks. Read more about the transition on the source link below.
