Watch 2D & 3D Simultaneously Using Backward-Compatible Stereo 3D

With every other flick hitting the theaters in 3D and all the tech-giants working towards making you reserve space in your house for a 3D TV, it was time that some one came up with a technology that allowed us to make a choice. A choice between 2D and 3D.  The stereo impression of all the 3D content can only be enjoyed with anaglyph or shutter glasses. Now, not everyone is comfortable with wearing glasses in front of their TV sets. Some people even suffer from discomfort or headaches when watching 3D movies with the glasses on. Addressing the issue, scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Computer Science department at Saarland University and Telecom ParisTech have worked out a solution. They call it the “Backward-compatible Stereo 3D” method. This innovative tech gets us high-quality 3D impressions when wearing glasses and high quality 2D impressions without the glasses.

The scientists studied the human visual system and found out how it reacts to stereoscopic images and how sensitive it is to do changes in binocular disparity in conjunction with other depth cues and explored it to succeed in creating a backward-compatible stereo picture that allows for 3D impression and minimizes the artifacts when not wearing glasses. TandemLaunch has licensed the invention and is about to develop it into a product.
