At some point of time or other, the thought that someone can ‘guess’ or ‘crack’ the password to our PC to access it must has surely crossed our minds. Passwords are a method of security but if revealed to attackers, they completely useless. Now, a team of researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and University of California at Riverside have developed a prototype of a computer keyboard that can detect the way the person is typing and can identify whether it is someone who is authorized to use the computer or not.

The Intelligent Keyboard (IKB) has contact electrification which in simple terms means that the mechanical force applied on the keyboard by the person can be converted into electronic signals. These electronic signals along with the behavioural biometric of keystroke dynamics can be used to differentiate among different individuals. Additionally, IKB can also calculate and record what is actually being typed by detecting the time intervals between typing of two letters and the force used in each typing action.

The other productive aspect of IKB is that it can make use of the keystrokes that the user is typing to generate electric power which might be enough to charge commercial electronics. This is however possible if the user can type atleast 100 characters per minute. Those who are worried about the durability of such device can find solace in the fact that the keyboard is expected to be covered with a special coating that will repulse dirt, so it is possible that it will remain in a good condition irrespective of its usage.

The researchers have only made a prototype. When will the exact product become available in the market and what will it cost has not been revealed as of now. Needless to say, this technology will find many takers because it will find its applications in fields like cyber security, artificial intelligence and many more.
