SleepServer is a project of the MESL Lab SleepServer created by computer scientists of CSE Department of UCSD.
Sleep Server Enterprise PCs can be accessed by remote connections and maintain their presence on voice over IP, instant messaging, and peer-to-peer networks even though the PCs are in low-power sleep mode.

It is estimated that SleepServer can reduce energy consumption on enterprise PCs previously running 24/7 by an average of 60 percent. This translates into approximately $60 dollars per enterprise PC, per year, on average.

SleepServer differs from proxing solutions like Apple Bounjour SleepProxy in a lot of ways.
Both systems will wake up your system on certain network requests, but only SleepServer can proxy stateful applications like downloads on your behalf.
SleepServer is also cross-platform; i.e. it is compatible with different operating systems (Windows, Linux), not just Apple computers running the latest MacOS connected to a Bonjour enabled Airport Express.
In addition SleepServer is geared towards enterprises, with proven enterprise features such as scalability, management and security.

#-Link-Snipped-#The primary researcher who developed SleepServer is Dr. Yuvraj Agarwal, who was advised by Prof. Rajesh Gupta and Prof. Stefan Savage. In addition, Thomas Weng has helped out with the deployment and the energy visualization aspects of the project.

Individual SleepServer users can view their personal energy savings via password-protected energy-use profiles on the UC San Diego Energy Dashboard.

The SleepServer developers recently won a San Diego Clean Tech Innovation and Commercialization grant. Funds from this program support commercialization of clean technology innovations developed at San Diego universities.

Their ultimate goal with SleepServer is to help buildings effectively become carbon neutral by generating as much renewable energy as they consume by taking the technology to compute servers and home computers as well.
