Simple RADAR

I want to make a simple RADAR that will detect an object and will notify the distance of the object. I can use either 8051 or Arduino for this.
Please help me from where should I start working on this?
or atleast tell me what frequency range should I use and which IC can be used as transmitter and/or receiver?
