Samsung Gear VR Launched In India At Rs. 8,200 - Specs At Glance
Samsung has released its virtual reality headset, the Gear VR, into the Indian market. The Oculus powered device will be available at online portals and retail shops across the country for a price of Rs. 8,200. At the first look, the Gear VR seems bulky, and it is. It weighs 318g on its own, and it needs a smartphone to work. Let us say the phone weighs 150g, and even then youâre looking at a total weight of 460g. It seems like a lot of weight for the neck to support, especially for extended period of time.
For it to work, you need to insert a compatible smartphone into the front space of the headset. The headset has a viewing angle of 96 degrees, and comes with a headband to secure the Gear on your head. The band is foam cushioned to be comfortable for the wearer, and to resist abrasiveness and chaffing.
The Gear VR has a touchpad and volume control buttons on the right-hand side, and these are large enough to be operated without fuss. It also has a focus adjustment wheel and a back button. The device comes with proximity sensors, accelerometer, and gyroscope, along with a microUSB port for charging.
The headset ships with a 16GB microSD card pre-loaded with some trial videos and trailers, which will fully introduce the consumer to the VR world while demonstrating the headsetâs capabilities.
Samsung promises a fully immersive virtual experience with the Gear VR. The true 360 degree virtual world will undoubtedly be a joy to explore, provided you own a high end Samsung Galaxy phone. Thatâs right; the Gear VR is only compatible with the Galaxy Note 5, S6, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge+ phones. It is pretty pointless to buy the headset if you donât already own, or have any plans of owning one of the phones mentioned above.
You could always buy the phone AND the headset; but we donât think many people are ready to spend that kind of money just for getting a taste of what VR is like, other than getting another universal VR headset or simply trying out the Google Cardboard.
