Samsonite Track&Go Will Keep An Eye On Your Luggage At Airport Using An App
Samsonite, one of the world's leading manufacturers luggage and travel bags, has teamed up with Google to create trackable suitcases. The new Track&Go system will use a smartphone app and bluetooth beacon to keep track of location of your suitcase within a radius of 70 meters. The luggage equipped with Track&Go is expected to ship to Europe towards end of this year and international markets sometime in 2017.
Last year, we informed you that Samsonite and Samsung are working together on a similar project to develop '<a href="https://www.crazyengineers.com/threads/smart-luggage-will-not-need-your-attention-at-airport.80421">'Smart Luggage' Will Not Need Your Attention At Airport</a>' that employs GPS. The current Track&Go offering, however relies on Google's <a href="https://security.googleblog.com/2016/04/growing-eddystone-with-ephemeral-identifiers.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Google Online Security Blog: Growing Eddystone with Ephemeral Identifiers: A Privacy Aware & Secure Open Beacon Format</a> aka EID protocol - a secure and private protocol that uses Bluetooth Low Energy beacon format. It marks the important objects in a special way so that they can be uniquely identified by smartphone apps by broadcasting unique public signals called Eddystone UID.
The new tracking functionality will be integrated into the Travelr App by Samsonite. Once the suitcases are registered in the app, it will keep track of them up to a distance of 70 meters. The app can also figure out whether the luggage is moving closer to or farther from the owner. If the luggage goes missing, the owner can then mark the suitcase as lost. The app will then pass on the information securely and privately to Samsonite's app network. If any other app user passes within the 70m distance of the lost baggage, the app on their device will quickly notify the owner of the new location of the baggage.
The next big step for Samsonite will be to collaborate with airports and private baggage handling service providers to expand the EID network. With about 24 million bags getting lost in a year, Samsonite hopes that the Track&Go system will help travelers find their lost baggage quickly and more efficiently.
