    Big data is a pretty big field! It constitutes of lot of things including data extraction, collection, storage, analysis etc. You first need to figure out the direction you want to go. Mainly, the part that attracts people most is data science which also includes analysis of data, so you might want to look at it. May be, you can propose a new way to analyze a complex data set!

You may focus on challenges that big data management brings and what are the most modern and optimum solutions being developed. For example, you may talk about large scale hadoop deployments and how databases are scaled to cope with the data.

    You may even focus on how Facebook manages the data at the mega-terabyte scale and still bring in the speed of execution. It'd be an interesting research; I'd say. Of course, you'll have CEans help you with your report; provided you make the selection and some progress.
