Big data is a pretty big field! It constitutes of lot of things including data extraction, collection, storage, analysis etc. You first need to figure out the direction you want to go. Mainly, the part that attracts people most is data science which also includes analysis of data, so you might want to look at it. May be, you can propose a new way to analyze a complex data set!
