NEC Makes You Feel Inferior By Boasting 101.7 terabits/sec

NEC is ready to make you feel inferior by telling you that your broadband, 3G & 4G is not as fast as theirs. The researchers and engineers have attained the data transfer rate of 101.7 terabits/section over a 165 kilometer long fiber optic cable. These obnoxious speeds were attained by combining light pulses obtained from 370 separate lasers. Each laser emits its own silver of the infra-red spectrum and each has its own multiple polarities, amplitudes & phases to encode the data being transferred. The data transfer rate achieved using this technique is way beyond today's commercial needs. However, it might just be a step for us towards the ultra-high-speed Internet of the future. You might be surprised to know that the Internet traffic is increasing by almost 50% every year.

NEC's Ting Wang calls this achievement as "a critical milestone in fiber capacity". In case you are wondering, 101 tb/s is equal to streaming 3 months of High-Definition video or 250 double layered BDs. At present, one of the busiest Internet routes in the world, between NY and Washington DC is only several tera bits per second.

NEC is not the only one to achieve these transmission speeds. NICT Japan has attained the speed of 109 terabits/sec using a different technique. They developed a fiber with seven light guiding cores. Each core is capable of carrying data at 15 terabits/sec. Jun Sakaguchi of NICT Japan says that they've achieved a new dimension "Spatial Multiplication" to achieve a new transmission capacity milestone.

There's however a challenge. Multi-core fibre optic cables are complex to manufacture. Researchers think that the first applications of these cables will be inside the huge server farms of big Internet companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon. We only hope that we'll see these cables making an entry to our homes so that we can enjoy some nice torrents.
