Microsoft Killing Its Feature Phones, Nokia Resurrecting Them

Three years after paying a hefty sum of money to Nokia to acquire its mobile phone division, Microsoft has taken a surprise step and decided to barter its feature phone business to FIH Mobile Limited, a subsidiary of Chinese manufacturer Foxconn.

Since Microsoft has its own smartphone OS aka the Windows Phone OS, the feature phones were already been put behind by the company way back in 2014. The company had earlier been rumoured to shut down the division completely, but had instead came forward to sell it, adding some capital to the company. FIH is a subsidiary of Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. Taiwan based Foxconn is the world's largest electronics contractor manufacturer, and has been producing major consumer electronics from companies like Nokia, Apple, Sony, etc.

Does this completely wipe off the existence of once the strongest and largest mobile brand? Well, that's unlikely because guess what- Nokia just made a deal with HMD global Oy. This gives HMD brand IP licensing rights so that HMD will now be responsible to create a new breed of Nokia branded phones as well as tablets. HMD global Oy is a newly founded company which just like Nokia is based in Finland. The deal will last for ten years. However Microsoft currently holds rights and designs used for many years in Nokia's phones. HMD is thus going to strike a deal with Microsoft to acquire those rights to become the soul licensee to make and sell Nokia phones on a global scale.

Nokia's CEO- Rajiv Suri

Nokia's move was already sniffed, especially when back in February CEO Rajiv Suri stated that the company is keen to resurrect its mobile handset business observing that the company still has massive fame and recognition worldwide. This deal marks another surprise move by the company, after having a pact with Alcatel, Disney and Withings. Seems Nokia isn't still done with its smartphone business. In fact, it just added a new exciting chapter.
