Is It Possible To Convert Greenhouse Gases Into Useful Gas & Control The Pollution ?

sir , Is that possible to mix any gases or chemicals to the exhaust gas in silencer after combustion in the internal combustion engine that reduce or convert the greenhouse gases (CO2,CH4,03.......) in to useful gases ?

    Hi,

Thing is, any conversions of the sort will need energy to be expended, and energy production leads to greenhouse gases being released anyway, so this might not be a great idea.

Methane can be utilised directly as fuel without the need for any conversion. The main problem is collection, as methane sources individually release minuscule quantities at a time and are spread far and wide.
As we are aware, Bio-gas plants generate methane from animal refuse and decaying vegetable matter, but they are not so popular as of now.
Moreover, combustion of methane will produce CO2 which itself is a greenhouse gas. Although management of CO2 should be easier compared to CH4 ... just plant more trees and reduce your carbon footprints.😀
Moreover, the oceans also acts as a sink for a majority of the CO2 present in the atmosphere, but only till the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is moderate.

CH4 is a larger culprit as compared to CO2 as it traps 25 times more heat per unit mass as compared to CO2. So, management of methane should be a greater priority.
The largest source of methane emission are the agricultural rice fields (surprising, isn't it?). India, China and certain other Asian countries where rice is a staple food for a majority of the population (and we do have a huge population..😳 ) are the main contributors.
So, what is the solution? Should we stop consuming rice altogether? That is not a viable solution. The better alternative lies in Biotechnology and Agricultural technology. Improved varieties (if needed be, genetically modified varieties) of rice need to be developed which generate less methane. Or search for an organism in Nature itself, which symbiotically links up with the rice plants and takes up the methane to convert it in to some less harmful product (like hydroxyl radical, perhaps).
Some serious thoughts need to be put in here. After all the future of this Blue Planet is at stake.
Keep thinking.. you just might come up with some brilliant idea that can immortalize you in the pages of history. Good luck.

There's a lot of research going on in this field. Especially in biotech sector. I have read about bacteria being engineered to be converted into bio-fuels. I think technology like this that makes CO2 the solution rather than a problem is completely fascinating. Burning the isobutanol (liquid fuel) in power plants that could recycle the CO2 again and use the energy to power electric vehicles - seems like a plausible idea. An added bonus is that electric vehicles are a lot more efficient than their ICE cousins so you get more miles for your isobutanol buck.

The continuing challenge IS about figuring out how to construct robust catalysts that can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and turn it into something useful.
