If you are a frequent traveller and love to explore new cities, chances of your using Google maps and its extensive set of features are pretty high. If you are one of those who has been into every nook and corner of the Google Maps app for Android devices, the latest update (version 9.4) has a pleasant surprise for you. Google has accommodated its Local Guide service inside the app so that those who explore new places to eat and hangout can review them and include those right within the Google Maps app. What's more, the top reviewers get interesting set of benefits.

Now, Google's Local Guide feature was earlier known as 'City Experts' and it was nothing but a community outreach program. Dubbed as Local Guide only last month, the feature will give reviewers many privileges such as, if you just sign-up but post no review, you get a monthly newsletter. If you've written and shared 5+ reviews, you get to join in the Google Hangouts with tastemakers, connoisseurs, and Googlers worldwide. If you are a regular reviewer and write up to 50+ reviews, your name and work gets highlighted in the Google Maps app with a Local Guides badge. And if you are a pro, and write 200+ reviews, you would be featured on various social media channels including - Google+, Facebook & Twitter and will be eligible to receive a thank you gift annually.

Google has also written a guide that shares some #-Link-Snipped-# and is encouraging regular Google Maps users and reviewers to take up the challenge of writing reviews about the places they frequently visit. That said, the current talk of the tech town is that Google has rolled out this update to its Maps feature as a competition to the Yelp Elite program, a crowd sourced reviews service that rewards its users for submitting high quality reviews. Then, there's not-to-be-forgotten social media platform Facebook, who recently launched a new feature that provides notes/tips about places where your friends might be hanging out.

What are your thoughts on the latest update to Google Maps? Do you think that review services such as Yelp need to feel threatened as Google enters their territory? Share with us in comments below.
