Electronic device that can convert a voice signal to a visual signal

I wish to come up with a project to help the deaf people. The idea is as below-
To make an electronic device that can convert a voice signal to a visual signal.
I dont know the idea can work or not but nothing is impossible in the world of engineers. So hoping for a little help for where to start from?? I want to initiate the project with VHDL coding.
