Project Abstract / Summary : Potable (i.e., drinking) Water is a necessity to which millions of people
throughout the world have limited access. Water is often seen as the most basic and
accessible element of life, and seemingly the most plentiful. For every gallon in rivers or
lakes, fifty more lie buried in vast aquifers beneath the surface of the earth. There is no
standard for how much water a person needs each day, but experts usually put the
minimum at 100 liters for adults. More than a billion people lack access to drinking
Water. Simply providing access to clean Water could save two million lives each year. As
the population grows, the freshwater available to each resident dwindles, and people have
no choice but to dig deeper. As cities have grown, many rivers have become unfit to
    provide untreated Water.
Water purification processes are well known and used throughout the World.
Water purification is the removal of contaminants from untreated Water to produce
drinking water that is pure enough for human consumption. Substances that are removed
during the process include parasites (such as Giardia or Cryplosporidium), bacteria, algae,
viruses, fungi, minerals (including toxic metals such as lead, copper and arsenic), and
man-made chemical pollutants. In this project, an apparatus and methods for producing
purified drinking water are disclosed. A hand pump is used in a closed system to generate
pressure to pass the water through a series of filters and a reverse osmosis membrane to
obtain potable water at the outlet. The flow obtained was analyzed using ANSYS and the
system delivering highest output was chosen. The project facilitates the availability of
pure drinking water without using any electrical components or devices. It is a cheap and
efficient means to produce drinking water.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Drinking water being a basic necessity which many people are deprived off and the fact that limited power supply is available to rural areas, we chose to develop a solution to meet these two problems. We wanted to develop a cheap, power saving and reliable means for drinking water production. This system can be used in homes as well as in coupling with existing pumps and provides drinking water with purity comparable to commercially available products.
