City Labs, Florida has launched the first ever tritium battery in the name of NanoTritium. Tritium being a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that contains two neutrons and one proton, its atom is unstable and decays into helium. This decay is accompanied by release of energy in the form of electrons, which can then be used to power devices. The element being mildly radioactive does not affect health of the user. The electrons released during thIS procedure are capable of powering the battery but are not radioactive enough to escape the battery and harm user.

This battery is more resistant as compared to those used in present scenario. It can withstand temperature ranging from -50 to 150 degree Celsius, strong pressure and vibrations capable of destroying ordinary batteries. Major advantage of the battery is it's lifespan. Half life of tritium is about 12.32 years, which means that the total amount of tritium used in the battery would reduce to it's half in 12.32 years. Hence the battery is capable of surviving for 20 years or more, which is far better than the expected survival time of a chemical battery. With such a high resistance to temperature and pressure, and a long lifespan; the battery would turn out to be useful in scientific, military and industrial applications for instance in underwater sensors.
