GPS navigation is incredibly useful and can even tell you exactly where you are on a roundabout. But, inside buildings, the weak GPS signals are hard to pick up and can suffer from multi-path reflections. Plus, in a multi-story building, there is no way of knowing which floor you are on when just using GPS.
Several ideas have been tried to solve this problem for indoor navigation such as dead reckoning with movement sensors but the solution that is now taking off uses Bluetooth beacons. Almost every smartphone can pick up Bluetooth signals and almost everyone has a smartphone, making the uptake of this technology very easy.

Good use case for BLE. Though RF propagation complications is likely to continue challenging the accuracy of the indoor location positioning. Perhaps some smart antenna designs to narrow signal beams to particular areas?
