Advanced Fuel Injection Technology Explained
As we all know the engine is the heart of any automobile. But to pump the engine various components are required. One of those components is CARBURETOR.
Function of carburetor is to suck in the air from atmosphere, mix it with a particular quantity of fuel to produce the air-fuel mixture which is then supplied to engine. Engine then carries out the combustion of that mixture to produce power to move the automobile. Thus the main function of carburetor is to INJECT the fuel in engine. Carburetor was invented by Austrian company Siegfried Marcus. Then it was further developed by Hungarian automobile engineers in 1893.
The traditional carburetor has mechanical components to perform the fuel injection. But this was not efficient as because of the mechanical operations noise was created and also fuel consumption was also high. This affected the mileage of the automobile.
This drawback gave rise to a new technology for fuel injection. CRDI (Common Rail Direct fuel Injection) was the name given according to the functioning of this unit. CRDi technology is used for DIESEL engines only. As the name suggests it has a common rail like a fuel channel which compresses diesel at high pressure usually upto 1600-1800 bar. Unlike the CRDi technology the conventional diesel engine had as many pumps and fuel rails as there are cylinders.
Common Rail Direct Fuel Injector
The CRDi technology works on a central microprocessor whose working is dependent upon the inputs from various sensors which give the values of various parameters involved in the motion of an automobile. Because of the microprocessor and sensors the exact quantity of fuel is supplied to the engine which makes the automobile efficient and wastage of fuel is automatically reduced. As this technology does not use any mechanical arrangement to operate the fuel injection, the noise which was produced in the conventional carburetors is removed.
As this technology gives better functioning, various brands of automobiles are using this technology all over the world. Different brands use the CRDi technology with different names. Let us see some brands in India using this technology.
1. Mahindra - CRDe
2. Hyundai - CRDi
3. Ford Fiesta Diesel - TDCi
4. Tata - Dicor
5. Mercedes - CDI
Adopting CRDi technology in diesel engines is becoming a necessity as it reduces the excessive emission and increases the performance. Thus CRDI is the replacement for carburetors.
