Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 With Full Screen Display Goes On Sale On 17th October

Xiaomi has finally decided to bring its flagship smartphone to India. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 was launched recently and it has managed to create waves among flagship smartphone buyers in India. Its predecessor Mi Mix was one of the first smartphones in the market to deliver on a bezel-less display and the Mi Mix 2 advances on the same principle with better internals for a flagship level performance. The Mi Mix 2 will go on sale exclusively on the Xiaomi official website and Flipkart. The first sale is scheduled for Dhanteras on the 17th of October at 12 noon. The Mi Mix 2 which is priced at Rs.35,999 goes head to head with the OnePlus 5 which is also priced in the same ball park (Rs. 32,999). In this article we shall see how both the smartphones compete with each other.

Before we get on with the comparison we have to highlight something the USP of the Mi Mix 2 which is its bezel-less screen. While Apple may be patting themselves on their back for making the full display iPhone X, Xiaomi was the first to do it with the first edition of the Mi Mix back in Oct 2016. The Mi Mix 2 looks better than the iPhone X has it does not have the front camera and proximity sensor module on the top. This means the video you play is unobstructed by a black bar. The Mi Mix 2 avoids the black bar by adding the camera module on the bottom and hiding the proximity sensor beneath the display.

Let’s now begin the OnePlus 5 comparison. The looks is where the OnePlus 5 fails badly, no we are not talking about just the full screen display that makes the Mi Mix 2 a beauty but its eerie resemblance to some of the older iPhones. The OnePlus 5 is less sturdy when compared to the ceramic body of the Mi Mix 2. The Mi Mix 2 uses aerospace grade aluminium frame with makes it lighter as well. The display on the Mi Mix 2 however falters when it comes to performance. The Mi Mix 2 has a 18:9 aspect ratio Full HD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels) display which is sadly the regular LCD panel instead of the more colourful AMOLED display on the OnePlus 5.

On the inside of the Mi Mix 2 you get the same Snapdragon 835 chipset that you find on the OnePlus 5 with the same 2.5GHz octa-core CPU setup and Adreno 540 GPU. However on the Mi Mix 2 you are stuck with 6GB of RAM while you get up to 8GB of RAM on the OnePlus 5. You can buy the Mi Mix 2 only in 128GB variant while you can get the OnePlus 5 in 64 and 128GB. The place where the Mi Mix 2 fails badly is its cameras. You get a 12MP camera on the rear and a middling 5MP camera on the front. On the OnePlus however you get the brilliant dual-camera setup (20MP + 16MP) on the rear and a 16MP camera on the rear.

When it comes to the battery you get nearly the same 3400mAh battery on both with support for quick charging. You are not granted a headphone jack as you find a USB Type C slot instead to handle data, power and audio as well. The OnePlus 5 in the end still manages to be the better phone in terms of performance and Mi Mix 2 will have a tough time shipping units in a country where hardware performance and camera are given importance over looks.

Good choice of hardware, but I've problem with the MIUI. One of the phones that we have for office use is also our 'test' phone. If you play music on it the app goes 'off' along with the screen.

There's no solution available to the problem, AFAIK.

Are you talking about the problem where the next song on the queue does not get played when the screen is off? I am facing the same problem with the Jio Music app but not with Saavn or Hungama music. In which app you are facing the problem?

We have forgotten to mention in the article that the Mi Mix 2 runs Android Nougat (7.1.1) which shrouded with MIUI 8 and is upgradable to MIUI 9 in the future.
