Xbox 720 Release Date & Specs Leaked - Rumor To Be Believed?

The rumours about the next Xbox have been doing the circles for quite some time now. And now some facts about the next Xbox have been leaked. Xbox 720 is rumored to have a Christmas 2013 launch. Microsoft was trying to keep the details secret but a new leaked document (56-page PowerPoint presentation which details different important and interesting information about Xbox 720) revealed details and so we can say that an official announcement from Microsoft can't be far away.

There is no doubt that Xbox 720 will be more powerful than Xbox 360. If rumors are to be believed, it can be 4 to 5 times stronger. The document states that Xbox will run with a processor that will be ARM or x86. The Xbox 720 is also slated to have 2 GHz with 64ALU GPU running at 1GHz and 4GB of memory. This improvement in the hardware would allow Xbox 720 to have "true 1080p and full 3D" output as well as flexible resizing and compositing. According to the latest rumors, the console will contain a revision of AMD's 7000 series graphics, which is based on its 28nm Graphics Core Next (GCN) Southern Islands tech.  The inclusion of AMD 7000 series graphics would most likely put the new Xbox on a par with the current rumored specs of the Sony PS4 because it is also expected to contain AMD Southern Islands graphics along with AMD x86 CPU and they will also essentially contain the same hardware. Noted Microsoft Blogger MS Nerd claimed that the long-awaited console will be "far smaller", cheaper and quite Kinect-focused when it finally lands on our shelves.

In terms of Internet connectivity, the Xbox 720 will reportedly use both WiMax and HSDPA (3G) coverage. Other features of the Xbox 720 are enhanced accuracy, stereo imaging, improved voice recognition, four-player tracking support and a boosted RGB camera.

As for storage, the Xbox 720 will have a Blu-ray disc drive, internal Flash storage, and a hard disk drive. The fact that it will have a BD is baffling given the knowledge of how Microsoft promoted HD DVD and went on to launch a HD DVD Drive for 360. But it is indeed a sensible move. According to the read speeds DVDs may be better than BDs. But BDs can hold more data than the DVDs. BD can store 50GB of data compared to the Xbox 360's dual-layer DVDs which contain between 8 and 9GB.

It is believed that Game developers are already at what they can do best- developing games for 720. This speculation arose due to the recent job avert from Peter Molyneux's Lionhead studio asking for developers with a background in DirectX 11 - a platform not used by any of the current consoles but is rumored to be used in the AMD-powered Xbox 720.

It is also rumored that new Xbox console will feature a system aimed at preventing owners playing used games – A move that might kill the second hand games market. That would mean no trading-in of old titles in order to fund the purchase of new ones.

According to the rumors a second version of Kinect might be the controller for 720. This might be true given the way it's currently pushing Kinect hardware and software. But the design of control pad might not go in for a total make over because its design in the 360 was popular amongst large number of people.

Now for the most important thing – Price. The leaked document says that it might be priced at $299 (£190). As you can see the entire report is filled with rumors and things will get clear only when Microsoft makes a proper announcement, which I think will not be far away.
