One must have a basic understanding of structured query language (SQL) like storing, retrieving, manipulating, etc of data but in today's world there are many companies which are looking for PLSQL and NOSQL , so one must have to cover basics of this topic also according to company requirement.

Talking about certification , there are Oracle database certification , if you have any of this certification you will be in front to get a job from others.

In order to work on databases you must know SQL as it it the base to initiate with database.

Then study about software in relation to databases for example MySQL, xampp, wampp etc

There are many free tutorials on you tube to learn learn database from scratch. There are also websites to learn for example Java t point, freecode, etc. I being a beginner prefer to following Java t point as it is easy to understand and begin with.

And at last one of the most important aspect is to learn practically how to connect forward end with database considering security as one of the most important factor in learning about database.

There are two types of databases are available.one can store the table type data and another can store the text data. To get the job better to go with SQL/PLSQL(stores table type data). First you have a good knowledge on SQL and then you can go for plsql. If you have these two skills you can easily get the job in software industry.
