eternalthinkerThe real-time database updates should be all the magic of ajax.
For things like chat, real-time notifications etc, they should be using comet programming too.
It's a way to implement data sending from server side, instead of polling the server frequently. Sometimes called as BOSH. -
Aditya JoshiTheir development line is primarily based on LAMP - ie, Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP/PERL. AJAX, as you say, gives it a better front end appearance like showing your updates real time. They have vast clusters of servers carrying out the background tasks. There are C++ and JAVA based systems for background processing, feed ranking etc.

Kaustubh KatdareFacebook owns and operates their own data centers and has hundreds of experts in PHP, Server Administrations etc. I remember watching their CTO's talk. He mentioned that Facebook engineers have developed customizations in core PHP to make it more efficient and faster. But the exact specifications of these changes have not been revealed.
