Unmanned Aerial Spy Vehicle That Imitates Hummingbird

California based firm AeroVironment Inc. has successfully developed an unmanned flying vehicle which moves like a hummingbird. The robotic vehicle has a physical appearance which will make you confuse it with a live hummingbird. It flies, flaps its wings, rotates, flies sideways, climbs, descends and hovers around a place with so much precision and realistic rhythm that the spectators are left dumbfounded. This is for the first time that an AUV has achieved all these awesome movements and degrees of freedom.

The hummingbird UAV has two wings which flap synchronously like those of a bird. It makes use of these wings only to generate the thrust for the aerial motion. The battery for powering this mini-drone is placed inside the fuselage of the vehicle. The designing of this prototype was carried by AeroVironment which received a contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) project.

The final design has been baptized as the “Nano-Hummingbird”. It has a wingspan of around 6.5 inches and weighs a little above 19 grams. The airplane can be fitted inside a bird like outer casing. The UAV contains inside it everything that is essential for the perfect flying routine- batteries, video camera, wireless communication modules and motors which act as actuators. This hi tech gadget is slightly bigger than an average hummingbird but smaller than the largest species found in North America.

This cute looking birdie can be a lethal weapon in the hands of the spies and will prove to be a useful tool in espionage and reconnaissance operations. It can be deployed in the enemy camp to gather classified information without attracting much attention.

This vehicle is however not yet completely finished and has a few problems that have to be sorted before it goes for a mission. The speed of this robot is on the lower side. Also, it is relatively louder and the noise created by its fluttering wings will attract undue attention. Anyway, the nano hummingbird is an awesome device for which the spies all over the world are waiting.
