UMI Hammer: Supposedly Rugged Android KitKat Smartphone With A MediaTek Chipset For Rs. 10,999

Not many smartphones that arrive from China to India have met with such scepticism as the UMI Hammer. The Chinese manufacturer UMI launched its new creation, the UMI Hammer without the slightest media buzz on Amazon and Flipkart through third party sellers. Apart from the ridiculous name, we found it hard to investigate the origins of the company because the “About Us” section of the official UMI website shows up a default error page and there is no Wikipedia mention of the company. The company titled their dated Android KitKat creation Hammer because they created the shell with “aviation aluminium alloy frame” and coupled it with a polycarbonate material that feels as “smooth as a baby’s bottom. We are not kidding; the company actually says that in the #-Link-Snipped-#.

The company even cites a slightly dubious video with laughable grammar mistakes made by a YouTube producer GeeksBuying where we see that the Hammer actually has aluminium frame (just the sides) and not a full aluminium body being used to hammer a small nail in some wood. On the hindsight they could have chosen a better name to show the sturdiness other than “Hammer”.

The company goes on with its dubious claims by proudly flaunting “Dual Glass” display technology where they have put a Corning Gorilla Glass on the top of the 5-inch HD resolution screen. Hang on UMI isn’t that how every smartphone manufacturer makes the screen of their smartphone? Moving ahead we notice a rather underwhelming 64-bit MediaTek (MTK6732) chipset stuck under the hood that houses a 1.5GHz ARM Cortex A7 chipset, a 500MHz ARM Mali-T760 MP2 GPU and 2GB of RAM. In the camera department, we find a 13MP LED flash equipped sensor on the rear and a 3.2MP camera on the front. Connectivity feature list consists of the usual suspects, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB. Sensor list is the usual with a gyroscope, light and a proximity sensor.

The laughable claims of the company continue when they claim that the UMI Hammer that measures 144 x 71.6 x 7.9mm and weighs 168grams can last for three to four days on a single charge of its 2250mAh battery. Internal memory of the UMI Hammer is at 16GB and the microSD card slot is capable of handling cards of up to 32GB. The smartphone is currently on sale at Amazon.com and #-Link-Snipped-# for Rs. 10,999.
