Twitter Crashed As Japan Welcomed New Year With More Than 16,000 Tweets Per Second!

Social Networking site Twitter came to a halt yesterday as world entered into Doom’s Year 2012! The time of the crash was around midnight hour in Japan. Twitter was able to recover the service in 90 minutes, but the site crashed a lot  after that.

When the world was busy in celebrating new year, a lot of Twitter users were faced with a screen saying, “Twitter is over capacity. Please wait a moment and try gain”. After being down for more than an hour, the site recovered and some lucky users were able to Tweet New Year wishes!

The site then crashed again repeatedly indicating the presence of new year in different parts of the world!  After an hour of up and down Twitter showed another page stating that they are down for maintenance:

Daily Mail reported that people in Japan were sending a record 16,197 tweets per second. The resultant overload caused the crash around the globe. Users from every corner of the world including Britain, Australia, Belgium etc also reported the halt. Carolyn Panner, spokesperson for Twitter, said in an email, “Some people experienced  issues connecting early today”.  She didn’t mention the reason for crash.

This might not be a big issue for Twitter as New Year is the single largest usage event of the year when the site has to maintain 300 million users together, but it did give a memorable start to Twitter-addicts!
