Transit Navigation Beta & Download Map Area Feature In Google Maps 5.7 For Android

Google's latest release Google Maps 5.7 for Android means you never need to carry a paper map again. With Google Maps 5.7 you get Transit Navigation (Beta), updated access to directions, better suggested search results and a photo viewer to Place pages.

Transit Navigation (Beta) brings stop-by-stop directions that are guided by GPS to over 400 cities around the globe. One interesting feature in this app is that after starting your trip with Transit Navigation, you can open another application or put your phone away entirely and Google Maps will still display an alert in your notification bar and vibrate your phone when your stop is coming up.

Transit Navigation (Beta) requires a phone with Android 2.1+ and the latest update of Google Maps for mobile.

Following video explains it's working in detail:

When you are abroad and don't have a data plan, what do you do to not get lost? You would get a blurred Google map, which is of little or no use. But a little advance planning by using the “Download map area” feature can help to a great extent.

Before going on the move, while you still have access to WiFi or data coverage, you can open up any Places Page, click “More” to get the Place page menu, and download Google’s maps for a 10-mile radius. That will do the trick. All your 'downloaded map areas' can be managed in your Google Maps cache settings.

Zooming in and out of Google Maps is quick with a few finger gestures, but it makes it difficult to say which zoom level you are at. To make is simple, you can turn on a scale bar, which updates based on your zoom level. Then there is a measure feature that let's you know the exact direct distance between two points on the map.
