Theiss Wins Wheatsone Contract To Construct 1.2km Microtunnel

Theiss, a construction, mining and services contractor, has just won a AU$60million (£38.6million) tunneling contract to construct a tunnel to connect two gas reserves which are offshore to the plant on land. It will be a 1.2km long passing under the ocean connecting two offshore gas reserves to the Chevron’s Greenfield Liquefied Natural Gas plant in Western Australia.

The microtunnel will be 2.5m in diameter and can have 1.1m diameter pipeline to deliver gas from the Wheatstone to the lago reserves. Tunnel Boring Machines will be employed to excavate the tunnels and the pipe jacking method is used to push the pipes after the Tunnel Boring Machines.

The engineering and procurement works will commence immediately and the construction works would begin in 2013.
