The Waterproof Kindle Oasis Releases In India On November 15; Pre-Orders Start At Rs. 21,999

When you think of e-book readers, the first name that comes into your mind is Kindle. This Amazon product is available across all price brackets. More recently Amazon has been focused on pushing the boundaries of what a Kindle can be with the Amazon Launches Kindle Voyage: A $199 E-Book Reader With Paperwhite Display & Free 3G and the #-Link-Snipped-#. Just recently it has announced the updated version of the Kindle Oasis. The new Kindle Oasis has the biggest display of any Kindle and is the most paper like with its high pixel density. The biggest change which was rather unexpected is waterproofing. We aren’t sure how waterproofing makes the Kindle Oasis a better product for the customer but it works as a gimmick to entice the customer who want to spend over twenty thousand rupees on an e-book reader.

Yes, you read it right. The Kindle Oasis, in its base version with 8GB of internal memory and Wi-Fi connectivity comes with a price tag of Rs. 21,999. You have to keep in mind that it is cheaper than the first iteration of the base variant Kindle Oasis which had the price tag of Rs. 23,999. If you have more money than sense you can even go with the top-end Kindle Oasis with Wi-Fi and Free 3G connectivity and 32GB of storage for Rs. 28.999. You might imagine why on earth does an e-book reader need 32GB of internal memory? The answer will surprise you. The new Kindle Oasis has support for Audible audiobooks. Sadly its implementation is a bit odd. You cannot plug in earphones into the new Kindle Oasis as it does not have an headphone jack instead you have to use the on-board Bluetooth to stream that audiobook to a Bluetooth enabled speaker or headphone. Audiobook versions of purchased e-books have to be purchased separately too.

Moving on let’s talk about the most important thing in an e-book reader which is its display. The new Kindle Oasis has a larger 7inch display and a pixel density of 300ppi. The old Kindle Oasis had a 6inch screen with the same pixel density. The display on the new Kindle Oasis is of course backlit with 12LEDs. The new Kindle Oasis has an all metal (aluminium) body and the same bump on one side for the page turn buttons. The page turn buttons will not be used much as the new Kindle Oasis has a much capable touchscreen. A new change has been made to the display which allows it to invert black and white colours. This means at night you can switch to black background and white text which would be much easier on your eyes.

Let’s talk about the waterproof nature of the new Kindle Oasis. The new Kindle Oasis has an IPX8 rating which means it is waterproof but not dust resistant. The new Kindle Oasis can withstand a dip in two meters of water for 60 minutes. The last Kindle Oasis came with a leather cover but for the new Kindle Oasis you have to spend extra cash for one. Leather covers in Red and Black will set you back by Rs. 3999 and Water-safe cloth covers in Black, White and Blue will set you back by Rs. 2999. When it comes to battery you might remember that the old Kindle Oasis had the two, one onboard which last for two weeks and one on the complementary leather case which pushed the standby time by six weeks. Since Amazon had ditched the leather case it has added a bigger battery which can last for up to six weeks on a single charge.
