The Lost Symbol - Dan Brown

I got this book recently. And as usual the cover was adorned with quotes from websites and news channels praising the book. One of them actually said, and I quote "So compelling that several times I came close to a cardiac arrest.....". I thought that's what everyone says!!

But I must say the book lives up to all the hype!! It has action, ancient and powerful secrets, you name it.

The protagonist is Mr Robert Langdon the, now famous, professor. He is called to deliver a lecture on the Masons by a close friend and mentor of his, Peter Solomon. The only problem is that Peter Solomon has been kidnapped and is being held by an intelligent lunatic (there's an oxymoron for you)!! Robert Langdon must now unlock ancient secrets, protected by codes and kept away from the prying eyes of the world, to secure Peter's release. Just as you think you have the book figured, BANG - there comes a twist!!

The book makes for a good read!! I'd give it 4/5.

    Oh no..

I was thoroughly disappointed by the book. After splendid books like Angels and Demons, Da Vinci code etc.., my expectations for this book were pretty high. But it didn't live up to my expectations.. ie., it's not as good as his other books.

I would give it only 2.5 or 3/5

I think that Dan Brown has been using the ancient secrets, bible & masons subject a little too often in this books, and that is my only problem with him/the book!!

but i think they are absolutely fascinating. when you discover such secrets you mostly feel excited 😁 it's like no one can write stuff like himπŸ˜€ may be it becomes monotonous at times... but it is good as a whole😁

Digital Fortress and Deception point.. Hmm..

I would very strongly recommend you try Angels and demons..

Of all Dan Brown books, I like it the most.

Of the five Dan Brown books, this is the order of my liking:

Angels and Demons, DaVinci Code, Digital Fortress, Deception Point, Lost symbol.

Ok, I decided I'd tell why I dont like The Lost Symbol.

Those who haven't read the book and those who are planning to read it, skip this post..

First, of his 5 books, two (Digital fortress and deception point) are science fictions. Only the remaining three have religion, occult mystery and all sorts of Illuminati, masons etc..

In those three, two have solid reasons as to why such a book should exist.

In Angels and Demons, the threat of the anti-matter is very real. Ok, the technology is not currently possible, and even more, the plot is really carried forward not by the anti matter itself, but by the crooked thoughts of an individual..
But still, it had something real and perceivable.

In Davinci Code, the book ended saying that the holy grail is really under the Louvre. Whether it is true, and if the holy grail actually exists and all are open to debate, but, the book, in its own way, concluded in finding something real..

Alas, but in the Lost Symbol, after page after page of action and mystery and what not., he finally says, all the secrets and all the powers the masons had is infact in the Bible.
After the bad guy dies, and the protagonist and his allies are saved, even after this, the book meanders for another 100 pages, saying that the Lost symbol is not actually a symbol from the masons, but it's nothing other than good old bible.

My point is, in the other books, there was something, to be found or saved. In the end, it would be found. Or saved.. Be it may that it was fictitious..
But in this book, we set out to find a symbol, we end up with Bible.. That was what disappointed me..

    What a coincidence!!
Though its a little late.. I've just started reading 'The Lost Symbol'. 😁

Let's see if the fifth one disappoints me.

About Atlas... I am keeping it for mid-September. I have an intuition that I am going to like it.
But, the size of the font in that book is so small that its hurting my eyes. (Hours of staring at the computer screen is responsible for this)

actually i liked the facts in the lost symbol. they were all fascinating.
but i have to say one thing the sequence of events in this book kept reminding me of da vinci code.πŸ˜• it has a lot of scenes like in da vinci code. and the final parts bored me. πŸ˜”

not his best book for sure.

    The word is "disappointed"..........
The novel starts off pretty well. Having read both his thrillers The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons the novel offers the same kind of medieval symbols plot. The build up about the secret The Freemasons keep and national security crisis does help to not keep one’s hands off the book. Robert Langdon’s character as usual is brilliant. Stays calm during crisis situation and never panics. But the whole novel crashes due to a "TAME END".....
can read if u r a die hard fan. otherwise u can just skim the book..

Didn't like the book a bit.

Pretty disappointed, as my expectations were too high as earlier Dan Brown's (Angles and Deamon, Da vinci, digital fortess etc..) books were great to read.
