Technology Testing Fighter Jets Proves Beneficial For Wheelchair Athletes

Technology that catered Eurofighter Typhoon shall now be utilized to boost the aerodynamics of UK's wheelchair athletes. When athletes were asked to move at their paces in the BAE Systems wind tunnel (generally used to test fighter jets), to assist in figuring out their most favorable racing position. The wind tunnel showed the racers how they interacted with the air around them, while stimulating racing speed over 30mph.

CFD, or Computational fluid dynamics, provided all necessary data that demonstrated how the body position of the athletes affected wind resistance. This helped the athletes in bettering their seating positions, plus also made them aware of different postures that shall prove out beneficial in different situations. This features in BAE System's £1.5m worth Technology Partnership with UK Sport. BAE Systems is also trying to come up with a new wheelchair in collaboration with UK Sport, TotalSim and wheelchair manufacturer DRAFT.
