Spinovo - The Garment For Relief From Severe Back Pain

Today all of us are struggling to find out best treatment over the chronic back pain. Other treatments known commonly are either time consuming or money consuming without any satisfaction to its user. Here the student of Industrial design Justine Smith has developed a new technology to fight against this ailment and named it as SPINOVO = Spine + New.

Smith is the student at University of New South Wales, Australia. She got the inspiration of inventing such technology by her father who had badly suffered from long-term back pain. With the help of physiotherapists, chiropractors and teacher of Alexander Technique. Her project was selected as the finalist in Australian James Dyson Awards.

This technology is the concept of smart clothing type in which pain is treated with special therapies. Heating, cooling and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy is one of them. Along with this bend sensors are also attached to wearer to give correct posture. Spinovo works to remove muscle and nerve pain through mild electric currents. It contains four layers of adhesive pads. These pads are attached to the weaker portion and it prevents electric energy from penetrating deep inside the skin. This technology uses the electromyography (EMG) sensors. This system uses two rechargeable batteries. This battery is made up of lithium ions. This batteries are implemented to apply enough heat for the therapy for one hundred and fifty minutes on full setting.

Spinovo garment is available in different sizes from XS to XL for both men and women. The parts of Spinovo can be easily removed for cleaning purpose. Spinovo has the dimension as 855 x 415 x 10 mm. Materials used are polyester knit, ethylene-vinyl acetate foam, silicone etc. The preparation of Spinovo is divided in four parts. Firstly the pattern is made. Further thermoforming, machine sewing and injection moulding is done.

Four points because of which Spinovo deserves the Australian Award:

• Spinovo is the garment incorporating electric energy, designed especially to get rid of lower back pain.
• This garment used film sensors. These sensors are thin, flexible sensors that affects on the middle and lower portion of the spinal cord.
• Similarly polymer  sensors  used records the changes in electrical resistance and gives the user an alert if his posture is wrong.
• Visual and aural feedbacks are given back through the remote control and LED lights are also used.

Thus the Spinovo helps to give a holistic approach to get relieved from the most dreadful back pain which has become the common problem amongst all ages.
