Spam Attack on CrazyEngineers

As many of you might have noticed by now, CrazyEngineers is under spam attack. Spammers register on our site and post huge number of spammy discussions in a short span of time.

While regular spam prevention features do not always work; we've put some more features in place to tackle spam. At times, this might cause some inconvenience to our fellow CEans. Please get in touch with me or any of our [USERGROUP=4]@Moderators[/USERGROUP] if you need any assistance.

If we miss out on spam, please report it.

This is really irritating to see a series of spams appearing on the oven fresh board when moderators are not around. While there are new features to save the forum from these nuisances, I think a better way could be possible if every post goes under the supervision and not posted right away when someone clicks the "post" button. I understand that some questions might look for urgent support but considering our system, I think moderators come online in every 30 minutes except the night time (in India), so I think even if someone posts something that requires real-time support, moderators will be able to check the post and publish it online.

This way spams will be killed even before being seen by our members.

I used to be online around in the morning so from 8-10 AM in morning I can clean up them. Also from now I will be online little late and catch them up.

Could there be some filter which prevents posting new threads with hyperlinks, or some common spam words until a mod approves it?

There is not, at this moment. We could moderate everything; which is still an option.

Do you mean post goes live only after it get approved? I think that might not be good option for us right now.

Yes; but looks like it won't be required now. The spam attack has died out, it seems. Not getting spam just as frequently now.

    Agree.
I think spammers only focusing on creating threads. Captcha can be added while creating thread. [I am not ROBOT] 😀

Captcha doesn't work with human spammers. The spammers are just like normal users with a special purpose. They create account using valid email IDs (gmail, outlook etc.) and then post spammy messages. As you may guess, it's damn difficult to identify such users while signing up.

We could moderate every message posted on the site; which is always an option. Let's see if this spam thing can be handled in a different way.

If one sees multiple spam messages and tries to report, I find that only the first report gets posted. The subsequent ones put up an error message asking one to wait 600 seconds or whatever.

Yep, it's a problem with no quick fix. Sorry for the inconvenience. We are looking for possible solutions.

Update: We've now removed regular users from the 'flood check'. You should be able to post messages just as frequently as you could before the spam attack. 😀
