Sony Smartwatch 3 Specs Reveal That Its Got More Brains Than Beauty
Post the release of #-Link-Snipped-# and #-Link-Snipped-# in 2012 and 2013 respectively, after the gap of almost one year, Sony has released the 3rd iteration of its Smartwatches: Smartwatch 3. The detailed specs of the device are available Sony Unveils SmartWatch 3 & SmartBand Talk At IFA 2014. The previous versions of this wearable technology weren’t as successful as its comparative products and it is fair to say that Sony has accepted its mistake, learnt from it and have come up with a better watch. Unlike Sony’s last two Smartwatches, which worked on Sony’s own OS, this new one runs on Google’s Android Wear.
The verdict by most people, when the images of the watch were released was that it is ugly as compared to its counterparts. But it won’t be wrong to admit that Sony has selected brains over beauty if we consider the services offered by the watch. It was an intelligent move by Sony to shift to Android Wear. By doing so, Smartwatch 3 has become the first watch to have the GPS facility offered, thanks to its pretty recent addition in Android Wear making it a good buy for runners who wish to keep the track of their distance, speed etc. Along with that, the ability to store music and make a connection to the Bluetooth headphones makes it a unique entity. The battery life of the device is also one of its central features. With the 420mAh battery, the largest ever in an Android Wear device, the battery can last upto 2 days.
Because of the Android Wear OS, the watch can be connected to any Android device showing info such as weather, forthcoming appointments or notifications as cards. The card when swiped left will open the related app or will display detailed information. When swiped right, the card is dropped. The watch is waterproof and not just water-resistant and thus can be worn while in pool, in shower or while washing utensils. The trade-off of course would that the dropping water droplets might activate the touchscreen and the close the open app or pause the song that you are listening to.
As far as the looks are concerned, it is undeniable that Smartwatch 3 hasn’t got the best of them. Instead of the more preferred circular face, it has got a rectangular face. It is not unsightly, but it is what you’d prefer to wear when on a run rather than to a party. The rubber strap is comfortable but the watch overall is slightly on the heavier side. The reason is the micro USB which allows to charge directly instead of a separate charging cradle unlike all other Android Wear devices. The watch unit is easily separable from its strap, thus giving the freedom to change the straps whenever desired. Right now, only black and bright green colour straps are available but Sony has assured for more colour straps in future.
All in all, Sony has evidently decided to concentrate on the features rather than looks. It is definitely dull compared to its rivals and isn’t for the people who like to flaunt their watches. However, with the increased battery life and the aforementioned features, it is inarguably one of the best currently in the market especially if you need to a device to monitor your daily exercise or fitness routines.
