Solid-State Storage Super-Sizes to 2TB

Solid state drives have proven to be better than hard disk drives in both their speed and efficiency. Flash storage vendor STEC is now aiming to extend the capacity of the flash storage used in smartphones and portable music players.

Flash storage is continually progressing and has seen growing applications in enterprise storage, especially where quick access to data is the priority. The 2TB SSDs use the MLC (multilevel cell) flash, which is more commonly used in consumer products due to its affordability when compared to enterprise storage. The new drives are approximately double the capacity of their predecessors.

Currently, the 2TB family comprises of 2TB s840 SAS SSD and 2TB s1120 PCIe Accelerator SSD with products for both types of interfaces. Each product will be available in a version with unlimited write capability for five years. STEC claims that it has curbed the degradation of SSDs by using CellCare hardware and firmware in its flash controllers. The new super-sized SSDs are expected to be available in February.
