Solar3D And Panasonic Bring New 3D Solar Cell Prototype With Higher Efficiency

A new three-dimensional photovoltaic cell prototype launched by Solar3D achieved a pioneering internal efficiency of 25.47%. All the energy that presently gets wasted via traditional solar cells shall now be harnessed using these new 3D cells. These cells are supposed to be much more efficient than the current breed of cells and should make solar a tad less expensive.

To develop the 3D cells, the company joined hands with Panasonic and took cue from their fiber optic devices and the techniques employed to produce them. The 3D design have micro-photovoltaic structures which convert photons to electrons. Also the technology employed is quite sophisticated as compared to the present range- the electrons are forced into the micro-photovoltaic structures, which make sure that the 3D solar cells maintains its day's high conversion rate even at night. So, while the conventional cells have a 15 to 19 percent conversion rate, the 3D cell boasts of a high 25.47 percent. If the production cost of these cells is maintained less, this could be starting a new chapter in energy production.
