Smart Clothes From Samsung At CES, Though Not As Smart As Google Jacquard

“Smart" might be exaggerating, but Samsung has launched a few sensor laden clothes at the CES this year. The smart clothes are an addition to the range of wearable devices the company currently sells. Having the look and feel of normal clothes, the smart clothes include a tank top and pants with NFC (Near Field Communication) tags on them. Apparently, they interact with your smart phones and can control them too.

The NFC tags house the battery and processor, but the sensors are distributed throughout the fabric. This enables them to effectively measure physical properties like heart rate, temperature and even body fat levels. Unlike Google Brings Touch and Gesture Interaction On Your Clothes With Project Jacquard, which merges technology with the fabric, Samsung has built it atop the fabric, which means there are plenty of limitations.

For starters, these materials need to be hand-washed, and are not machine-washable. It is pretty ironic that Samsung also launched a new washing machine at the CES this year. Some of the advantages of this smart suit that Samsung bets on are, capturing contact details at a conference so that a business card is not required, and waving your smart phone across this sensor before a meeting so that all notifications are silenced.

Samsung’s smart suits are complete with two other accessories. The Welt, which is a Wellness Belt, and a Sol Bag that also doubles as a solar panel to charge your devices on the go. The belt is capable of detecting when you have had a big meal, and expanding so that you can breathe easy. And the bag with solar panels is the size of a laptop, and can charge your tablet or smartphone when you are out for long.

These smart clothes from Samsung are all still in the concept stage, and there is no doubt that these will evolve into something so cool that you don’t even notice you have it on, but just not yet.
