Should kids be taught coding?

The Indian TV media is airing ads that encourage parents to make their kids learn to learn to code (make an app).
The advertisement shows a young couple sipping tea and watching 'businessmen from all over the world' fighting with each other in front of their home.
The neighbor asks why are they fighting; and the lady says "these businessmen are fighting to invest in the app developed by my son. He learned it online from WhiteHatJr - a company that teaches kids how to make their app (and to code)."
The comments on the ad on YouTube are pretty much against the idea of teaching kids to code.
What do our fellow engineers think about teaching code to kids?

MIT has been at it for a while. I got their coding software ‘Scratch’ for my granddaughter a few years ago when she was nine.
For a virgin mind, nursery tales or nuclear physics are equally strange, I suppose.
