Samsung Transparent LCD Display Mass Production Begins

There may not be immediate applications of the transparent LCD displays, but electronics major Samsung has announced mass production of 22" transparent LCD panel displays. The transparent LCDs consume 90% less power than traditional LCDs as they rely on ambient light than usual back-light. The world desperately needs better quality and less power consuming displays, and Samsung may be the first company to begin their mass production, it may take a while for them to be a part of desktops, laptops & tablets. For now, transparent displays look cool and have been featured at technology shows over the past few years, it would be interested to follow the advancements in transparent liquid-crystal-display technology.

Samsung is currently producing two versions of the transparent displays - B/W and Color. Both versions feature 500:1 contrast ratio and 1680 x 1050 (WSXGA) resolution. Samsung claims that their black and white transparent LCD features 20% transparency which is world's best and the color LCD features 15% transparency.  Compare this to the traditional LCDs that have 5% transparency. Both versions feature HDMI & USB interfaces.

These LCDs are heavy on pocket as of now and engineering brains at Samsung are figuring out various uses of transparent LCDs. Possible uses could include using these panels as Windows to display advertisements, advertising in shops and in schools as interactive communication device. Regular readers are aware of my undying love for SAMOLED screens - and as of now, there's no official word on availability of SAMOLED transparent screens from Samsung.

Now quickly tell us where do you think these transparent panels can be used. Show your creativity through comments.
