Robotic Pills To Replace Injections In Near Future

A voyage through the human body no longer seems a mere fantasy. Tiny devices like Robotic Pills may soon perform surgery, administer drugs and help in diagnosing numerous diseases. The notion of coming up with robotic pill in screening, diagnosis and therapeutic procedures seemed to be a novel biotechnology and engineering challenge in the past. However, these challenges have given rise to creative solutions that has influenced robotics and other medical technologies in general. The day is not far enough when doctors will start recommending patients to swallow sophisticated gadgets instead of taking pills or injections. With this idea in mind, Mir Imran has developed a robotic pill to replace inject-able drugs for chronic conditions like diabetes. This research is backed by Google Inc's venture-capital unit.
This pill consists of an ingestible polymer and tiny hollow needles made of sugar that are designed to safely deliver drugs to the small intestine. Now how does this pill work? well the working of this pill is described in a pictorial form in the image below:

This pill is developed by an Indian-born, founder of research lab and business incubator, Incube Labs in Silicon Valley. He is the founder of more than 20 medical-device start-ups. More than dozens of such start- ups have been acquired by companies such as Medtronic Inc. He is the developer of first implantable cardiometer defibrillator to correct irregular heartbeats. He owns over 300 patents, which clearly indicates his interest and knowledge in biotech field. The major drawback of this pill is that drugs used to treat various chronic conditions which include diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis can not be delivered in the form of pill. This is because the stomach acids breakdown the proteins. However as this engineering based approach is very innovative and if launched in near future it will interest a large number of pharmaceutical companies and investors. Also it has come to light that the pharma companies which would license the technology for use with their own drugs have already started showing interest in this research project.

The pre-clinical studies it is proved that this pill can boost drug absorption as high as syringes do. this pill has not been tested on humans , it is probably a year away from getting federal approval. But once this research is approved it has immense potential to rupture existing multi-billion dollar market for injectable drugs. This will benefit doctors as well as patients suffering from diseases like diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. This research has vast scope in various fields and it is the need of time. I always imagined robots will be able to cure humans and cure diseases inside human body and will remain inside from human birth....
And now it seems like the work in the field has started
