Reliance Jio, the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) owned telecom operator almost doubled the average download speed in January 2017 at 17.42Mbps over December 2016, according to TRAI; reports LiveMint. The telecom regulatory authority of India measures the download speeds offered by various operators throughout the country through its MySpeed App ( TRAI ). The app showed that Jio averaged download speeds of about 8.42 Mbps in December last year.

The second place was scored by Aditya Birla group's Idea Cellular which offered average download speeds of about 8.53Mbps showing an upward trend from about 6.6Mbps in December. Airtel didn't perform as expected. It's average download speed in January 2017 was 8.15Mbsp compared to 8.42Mbps. Other leading telecom service providers like BSNL and Vodafone showed some decline in download speeds.

In September last year, Reliance Jio initiated pricing wars with the existing operators by announcing free voice calls forever. Reliance is betting very big on 'data' over 'voice' and has began offering cheapest mobile Internet rates in the country. With Jio's entry in the telecom markets, existing operators are now offering attractive plans to retain their customers. Ultimately, the service provider who offers highest quality of service at reasonable price point would win the game.

If you are a Jio user, we'd like to have your opinion on average download speeds on Jio network.
