You might want to start with "Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckel (What's the spelling?). Its a free downloadable ebook!

You could use JAVA2: A complete reference. It's quite good. But I dare say that it will take you at least 2 months to completely read it even if you are clear on concepts of OOP. If you are not clear on this subject then I must warn you that this one just brushes on those topics so you might want to read something lighter like the Dummies series for JAVA.

JAVA is great to work with and I particularly enjoy the applet programming section.

I would also recommend 'Thinking in Java' by Bruce Eckel available for free download at #-Link-Snipped-#

Head First Series books are cool & the books are interesting. I recommend them to programming newbies who get scared by the size of Java books!

Sun has its own jdk tutorial online and its free ๐Ÿ˜ If possible try out that. Above all i'll prefer that. Its pretty extensive and provide good reference as per your requirement.

But its better to have knowledge of OOP concepts before learning java, as java is just a language which supports OOP to an extent

    I recommend.

    1. Java Complete Reference - Herbert Schildt
    2. Core Java Vol 1 & Vol 2 (both books) - Cay S. Horstmann
