PowerUp 3.0 Smart Module Lets You Control Paper Planes With Your Smartphone

Paper planes have been a part of everyone’s childhood. As kids you might have wasted many sheets of paper trying to perfect your design so that your paper plane flies the farthest distance accurately. But these paper planes lacked something that we all wished it had, a propeller and a controller. This childhood fantasy has now become a reality with Shai Goitein’s PowerUp 3.0 Smart Module. The module has a carbon fibre frame and can be attached to any handmade paper plane made out of copier paper with its inbuilt clips and be flown with the help of an app on your smartphone. To make sure that the paper plane flies perfectly while banking as you tilt your smartphone left or right the module automatically adjusts the thrust level. The PowerUp 3.0 module is powered by a Lithium Polymer battery that gives it 10 minutes of flight time. The module uses Bluetooth Low Energy to communicate with the smartphone and can be flown to distances of up to 180 feet / 55 meters.

The module has been a breakaway success on Kickstarter as it has managed to cross its $50,000 goal within a single day. As of this writing the project has garnered over 71,000 US dollars. For the meanwhile the module has only got an iPhone app but its makers promise to deliver the Android app for Android 4.3 when they reach the extended funding goal of 150,000 US dollars. To be an early adopter of this gadget you have to shell out at least thirty dollars and for additional hardware and other goodies you can spend up to 500 dollars but you have to wait until summer of next year to get your hands on it as the company has set May 2014 as the product shipping date.
