Portable Sign Language Translator App For The Deaf From Technabling

Computer scientists at Technabling, a venture from Aberdeen University, have developed a technology that translates sign language into text, thereby empowering the deaf people by making the way they communicate simpler & convenient. The portable sign language translator (or PSLT) app asks users to sign before a camera of a smartphone or a laptop. The persons they are conversing with will be immediately able to see their actions translated into text.

The PSLT app can be used with a variety of different sign languages that include British Sign Language (BSL) and Makaton. Apart from this PSLT will give its users the facility of personalizing the sign language so that they are able to make the app fit for their needs. Thus, they can actually develop their vocabulary by updating their own signs for concepts and terms they need.

This app will benefit all the students who experienced limitations because of the communication disadvantage. They may now also be able to enter the job market. Suppose a students who are getting training at a joinery wants to express the word 'dovetial joint'. He might stumble at it because there is no sign for such a word in BSL. But if such students start using PSLT, they can create their own signs for such technical jargon.

Right now the development and testing stages are in progress and we might get the complete app for this technology by next year.

Sign language users have inputted into the development and testing of the product since its conception. Scientists on the project want sign language users from Aberdeen city and shire to get in touch to become involved with its ongoing development.
