Pedal Operated Steering For Physically Challenged

Project Abstract / Summary : This project paves way for the physically challenged people (Who lost their hands) to experience the utility of automobile. The population of our country is about 1,028 million out of which 21million people are physically challenged among them, the people who lost their hands due to accidents or by birth deficiency also exist in a large rate. In this method, the steering wheel which is controlled by hands are altered to pedals and controlled by legs. Hence physically challenged can able to drive four wheelers and this method can also be used in industry. The pedal arrangement designed in this project is almost similar to an existing car with the left leg permanently engaging the steering pedal. The right leg toggles between accelerator and brake. I have replaced the clutch pedal with steering pedal. Steering pedal is in the form of seesaw which steer the wheels left and right direction. A separate gear shifting lever is provided inside the driver cabin to direct the vehicle towards forward and reverse motion.. This lever is designed in such a way that it can be easily operated by legs. This vehicle can also be used by normal people without any difficulty. On the whole, the embarrassed feeling of the people who had lost their hands will definitely get rid off and it gives sense of freedom even to the people who lost their hands, so that they too can enjoy the means of transportation.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : This project paves way for the physically challenged people (Who lost their hands) to experience the utility of automobile. The population of our country is about 1,028 million out of which 21million people are physically challenged among them, the people who lost their hands due to accidents or by birth deficiency also exist in a large rate.
I have seen peoples giving special care to the physically challenged people, which is good but certain time the people who are physically challenged will feel bad about their life due to depending on small things from others. Hence I thought and worked on this project to at least make them happy and enjoy their passion towards driving.
